Four-legged friends searching for a home are a step closer to having a new shelter.
The Topeka City Council Tuesday night approved a zoning change for property to expand Helping Hands Humane Society. The council unanimously approved the shelter's plan to add 20,000 square feet. Helping Hands will use the space for offices, pet kennels, outside exercise areas and adoption areas.
Helping Hands is still in its capital campaign to raise funding for the facility. Once they raise the money, they'll begin construction. They also have plans for a next phase of expansion, which will bring them back to the council to ask approval for another 28,000 square feet.
