(CNN) — A man was rescued Thursday after falling from a cruise ship and treading water off the coast of Florida for more than an hour, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
The 39-year-old was on a Carnival Sensation cruise ship about 28 miles east of the Florida city of Port St. Lucie when he fell, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Nick Ameen. The man fell about 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Coast Guard rescuers began to search for him, but a Disney cruise ship rescued him first.
Rescuers from the Disney ship scooped the tired man from the water about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, Ameen said.
“He was exhausted after treading water for so long,” Ameen said. “We don’t know what caused him to fall off the ship, but we are happy that he is on board now.”
