Indian Jet Intercepts Air France Flight

NEW DELHI, India (CNN) — India scrambled a fighter jet Thursday to intercept an Air France plane after the aircraft failed to identify itself correctly as it entered Indian airspace near Pakistan, the defense ministry said.

The MiG-29 jet broke off and returned to its base after the Bangkok, Thailand-bound flight from Paris, France, transmitted an accurate radar-response code, the ministry said in a statement.

The incident occurred over Amritsar in the state of Punjab, on the border with Pakistan.

Last year’s Mumbai terror strikes that killed more than 160 people has strained ties between arch-rivals India and Pakistan.

India accuses Pakistan-based militants for the attacks on its financial capital.
