BAGHDAD (AP) _ Baghdad police continue to investigate the second
robbery of a financial institution this week, possibly carried out
by insurgents attempting to finance their cause.
Authorities say gunmen killed eight security guards and stole
nearly $7 million during an early morning robbery at a state-run
bank in central Baghdad.
At least one official said today's robbery appears to be the
work of insurgents trying to finance their operations, although he
did not offer any evidence to support his conclusion.
Iraq has seen a recent increase in deadly robberies.
On Sunday, five people were killed when gunmen broke into a
money exchange office in a commercial district.
In April, gunmen armed with silenced weapons killed at least
nine people during robberies of jewelry stores in Baghdad, and at a
currency exchange office in the southern city of Basra.
