ROME (AP) -- A freight train derailed just outside a station in an Italian town and two cars filled with gas exploded, killing at least two people and injuring dozens, officials and news reports said Tuesday.
The incident in the seaside resort occurred shortly before midnight Monday just after the 14-car convoy coming from La Spezia and headed for Pisa has passed through the station, ANSA said.
Videos uploaded on YouTube showed a huge inferno raging in the night, with the sound sirens and explosions piercing the air.
A person who answered the phone at Viareggio's firefighters headquarters early Tuesday confirmed a train had exploded and there were casualties before hanging up.
