WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -- A woman has died and her newborn is in critical condition following an accident Tuesday night in southwest Wichita.
The crash happened around 9 p.m. Tuesday on Meridian near Esthner when police say a northbound Mercury sedan turned left in front of a southbound Nissan SUV.
There were three people in the SUV: a 25-year-old man who was driving, a 53-year-old man and 46-year-old woman. All three were hurt and taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis for treatment.
Four people were inside the Mercury sedan, including a 21-year-old male driver, a 21-year-old woman in the passenger seat, a 17-year-old male and a 24-year-old man.
The most seriously hurt was the 21-year-old woman, who was 7 months pregnant. She was taken to a local hospital and doctors soon delivered a baby girl. The baby is in critical condition but her mother, 21-year-old Trevadawn Pauley of Wichita, died just after 1 a.m.
Police do not suspect alcohol was involved in the crash, but they are asking that any crash witnesses call them. Specifically, they believe the driver of a small blue pickup witnessed the accident and officers want to talk to that person.
