Wichita Class Uses Stand-Up Desks To Help Kids

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Students in a fifth-grade classroom in Wichita don't sit down or keep still most of the day. And that's the way the teacher, Patty Daman, wants it.

Daman used a $5,000 grant from a private organization to install stand-up desks, with ``foot fidgets'' _ a bouncy foot rest.

Students in Daman's class at Kensler Elementary are encouraged to stand at least 75 percent of the time during her class.

She says being able to stand and fidget helps her students concentrate and reduces distracting behavior. And a side benefit is that standing helps the students burn some calories.

Daman says some parents complained but most support the idea.

The Wichita Eagle reports the grant came from Education Edge, a private fundraising group that supports Wichita schools.
