TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- To help ease the setbacks created by construction, one Topeka business is flooding downtown restaurants and shops with cash.
Westar employees visit Jersey Mike's, 718 N. Kansas Ave., during a cash mob to support Kansas Ave. businesses on August 29, 2014 (WIBW)
For the past month, Westar employees have been participating in Cash Mobs every Friday - to help local business along Kansas Ave.
Every Friday, employees are encouraged to eat or shop at specific businesses during their lunch breaks. The cash mobs grew from an employee's idea and now has given some businesses their largest influx of spending since construction began.
"We do feel a lot of responsibility as one of the major employers downtown to do what we can for these smaller businesses to help them survive this construction," said Westar's Director of Corporate Communications Gina Penzig.
Also, free two-hour parking is available at all meters with yellow covers.
