TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Despite a loss against Emporia State, Ichabods fans had a lot to cheer for at Saturday's game.

Fans clapped as Washburn University President, Dr. Jerry Farley, and head coach Craig Schurig received the national Donate Life Champion Award on behalf of Washburn University.

The award was presented by the Midwest Transplant Network, Donate Life Kansas and Donate Life America, in recognition of
the school's support of organ donation efforts, like its annual Run for Life race and especially of the gift of life from the Ichabods Jermon Watson, who lost his life in 2011.

"He was able to donate many of his organs. He was also a tissue donor," Brooke Connell, a spokeswoman for the Midwest Transplant Network, said. "So he helped and save the lives of more than 50 people through his donation," she said.

The award is given to select figures from the athletic community who have inspired others to give the gift of life, sight and mobility.
