TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Washburn University students could get some back-to-school aggression out with an unusual fundraiser on campus Thursday.
People on campus were invited to pick up a sledgehammer and take aim at a piano.
The Piano Smash was a fundraiser for Washburn’s Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Colony, which is a men’s music fraternity. For a suggested donation of five bucks, participants got three swings to inflict as much damage as they could.
The group had three old pianos lined up for the event. All the splinters were a sign it was a smashing success.
Washburn's Phi Mu Alpha chapter fell by the wayside in the 1990s, but reformed this spring. The chapter's still in a probationary period that allows the national group to pull the plug if there are problems.
Members plan an all-American composer concert. They also perform at nursing homes and hospitals.
