Voters Cast Early Ballots

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- With Americans voting for a president this year and many hotly contested state and local races, voter turnout is expected to be up.

Shawnee County Elections Commissioner Andrew Howell says advance voting numbers are higher than they were two years ago, but not quite up to the 2008 advance voting numbers. In 2008, advance ballots by mail and in person totaled 19,832. As of the end of Tuesday (10/30), Shawnee County counted 9,802 mail-in and in-person advance ballots.

"People still have a few days to advance vote and we're gonna have to have those back here pretty quick," Howell said. "If you want to advance vote in the office, they're gonna be able to do that until Monday at noon."

Shawnee County is one of many election offices extending business hours for advanced voters. From 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. weekdays, voters can cast an advance ballot in person at 911 SW 37th St., Topeka.

Shawnee County voters also have the option of requesting an advanced ballot be mailed to them. Those wishing to vote in advance in this manner may either download an application from the county web site at or call the Election Office at (785) 266-0285 and request an application be mailed to them. Applications may be returned by mail or faxed to the Election Office at (785) 266-0299. The last day for the Election Office to mail ballots to the voter is Friday, November 2nd.

All voted mailed advanced ballots must be returned to the Election Office by 7 p.m. on Election Day, November 6th.

Commissioner Howell reminds voters the showing photo identification is necessary to vote this year. Applications for Advanced Ballots must include a copy of the photo identification or include the number of the applicant’s Kansas driver’s license or Kansas nondriver’s identification card. Additionally, all signatures are verified with those on file. For more information call the Shawnee County Election Office at (785) 266-0285.
