TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Friends or family of Shawnee County jail inmates will soon get to visit with them from the comfort of their own home.

Shawnee County Department of Corrections Director Brian Cole announced at Thursday's county commission meeting that come January, the jail will have video visitation.

The new technology will allow inmates expanded visitation hours to talk to family or attorneys over the internet.

Cole also said it will be helpful for visitors because they won't have to worry about parking.

Officials are also working on having a Shawnee County offender search program up and running by January, so you can see who is in jail.
