Victim Identified In Fatal Riley Co. Pedestrian Ax

RILEY COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) -- Officials have released the name of a Manhattan man who was struck by a car and killed while he was out walking Saturday morning.

Carl Schurle, 72, died Saturday, January 5, 2013, from injuries he sustained in an accident west of Manhattan.

Officers were called to the 5800 block of Anderson Avenue just before 7 AM.

According to police, a 1991 Oldsmobile 98, driven by 18-year-old Jacob Brazzle, was eastbound when the vehicle struck Schurle, who was also eastbound, walking on the side of the road.

Schurle was pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries. Brazzle was not injured.

Troopers from the Kansas Highway Patrol’s accident reconstruction team were called in to assist Riley County Police officers with the on-scene investigation.

On Monday, RCPD officials said the circumstances surrounding the accident are still under investigation and no other details on the deadly collision are being released.

Schurle lived on Kitten Creek Road in Manhattan and Brazzle lives not far from there on Silver Creek Road. Both addresses are located off of Anderson Avenue, a few miles from the scene of the accident.

According to his obituary, Schurle was an auto mechanic, a father and a grandfather.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley, KS. Respect calls may be made anytime Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Riley Cemetery.
