MAYETTA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Veterans Administration and the state's Native American tribes want veterans to know they're working together to meet their needs.
The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation hosted a Native American Veteran Benefit Enrollment Fair Thursday at the Prairie Band Casino and Resort.
The Citizen Band Potawatomi, Kickapoo, Iowa and Sac and Fox tribes also took part.
The tribes and the VA wanted veterans to know the housing, education, jobs, legal and other services they can obtain. Information booths were set up to assist veterans with enrolling on site.
Organizers say awareness is the biggest obstacle. Tribal leaders say they don't always know all of the veterans in their area, and the veterans don't know what benefits the tribes can offer.
The VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System is establishing agreements to reimburse tribal clinics for care they give to veterans, as opposed to Native American veterans always having to travel to a VA hospital or clinic.
