TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- The Topeka Public School District is requesting a mail in ballot election, months ahead of the county's scheduled November elections.

Shawnee County Election Commissioner Andrew Howell told commissioners that april 14th is the projected canvas of those mail in ballot elections.

USD 501 is asking district voters to approve a $142 million bond issue, with ballots due April 8th.

Some critics say the November election might have greater participation and one commissioner posed the question of whether they had the authority to deny the request for an April vote.

Shawnee county hasn't had a mail in election since 2007.

County Commissioners also passed a motion allowing the Kansas Expocentre to purchase high-definition television production equipment for the upcoming NAIA Wrestling Tournament in Landon Arena. The cost is $24,000.
