(WIBW) - Two members of Topeka's Westboro Baptist Church have left the organization.
In a blog post published Wednesday on Medium.com, 27-year-old Megan Phelps-Roper announced she and her 19-year-old sister, Grace, have left. She writes they don't know where they will go from here but that they are now cut off from the family and are considered to have betrayed them.
Megan also apologizes for some of their actions, stating, "We know that we've done and said things that hurt people. Inflicting pain on others wasn't the goal, but it was one of the outcomes. We wish it weren't so, and regret that hurt."
Westboro Baptist Church is led by Megan's grandfather, Fred Phelps. Members first gained notoriety for their anti-gay pickets, with signs proclaiming, "God Hates Fags." In more recent years, they have picketed funerals of military personnel killed overseas. WBC says the military deaths are God's way of punishing the nation for its tolerance of homosexuality.
In her blog, Megan wrote that she and her sister will never not love their family, but they are searching for a better way of life.
"We know that we can’t undo our whole lives. We can’t even say we’d want to if we could; we are who we are because of all the experiences that brought us to this point," she wrote.
