TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Just in time for Twinkie Fest, the golden, cream-filled cakes made an early return to store shelves.
Wal-Mart began selling Twinkies at about 1600 stores nationwide Friday, including Topeka locations. The cart wheeled out at the Wal-Mart at 1501 SW Wanamaker Friday afternoon also had Hostess cream-filled chocolate cupcakes and powdered-sugar covered gem doughnuts.
Thousands more Wal-Mart stores will have Twinkies by Sunday morning, a day before the re-formed Hostess company said they be available.
A spokesperson for Dillons said its stores, too, had the snack cakes in stock. Topeka's SW 29th and Urish location already had them out on the shelves, with other stores expected to stock them over the weekend.
Jake Owen and his daughter, Peyton, were excited to snap up a box, emblazoned with the declaration "sweetest comeback ever" at the Wal-Mart on Wanamaker Friday. Jake said Twinkies are an iconic snack food.
Hostess closed its Emporia bakery last November when the company declared bankruptcy among a strike by its bakers' union, putting 500 people out of work. The company's new owners reopened it as their flagship facility, expecting to hire 250 to start.
To celebrate, Emporia is holding a Twinkies festival from 11 am to 1 pm Monday, July 15. Activities will take place in the west parking lot of Flint Hills Mall. Events include costume, song and eating contests, along with giveaways.
