Tree Dedication Honors Topeka Homicide Victim

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Friends and family gathered to celebrate the life of an accidental homicide victim Monday.

Terri Sims, 49, was killed in September, when someone fired multiple bullets through her front door. Topeka Police say Sims wasn't the intended victim, that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Sims' family members and community activists dedicated the tree outside Golden Corral restaurant, where Sims had worked.

Topeka Police are still waiting for breaks in the case. Jeff Wagaman, Director of the Crime Victims' Compensation Board, spoke at the event on behalf of Attorney General Derek Schmidt. He joined family and friends, who say senseless violence can be stopped.

Two more Topeka homicides remain unresolved: the death of Jonathan Young, who was found with multiple gunshot wounds in Topeka Cemetery in September, and Guillermo Galicia, who was laid to rest Monday (10/15).
