GEARY COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) -- The search has been called off for an unusual pet that was reported missing from a Geary County home earlier this week.
The Geary County Sheriff’s Department received word Monday night that a 50 lb. African Spurred Tortoise was not in its pen where it resides at a house on Walla Walla Road outside of Junction City.
Officials say the tortoise, described as being the "size of a truck tire," was believed to be stolen at first but authorities also considered the possibility that the gate to its pen was accidentally left open or that it burrowed underground out of fear due to recent storms.
On Friday, Geary County Sheriff Tony Wolf provided an update, saying the tortoise has been located.
"He was found this afternoon by the owners in a large ravine full of trees behind the residence. It had fallen down a short cliff and was stuck there. He was in fine health and is happy to be home," the sheriff said.
