TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Topeka city council members continue to speak out against some of Mayor Bill Bunten’s proposals to crackdown on crime.
Only Sonny Scroggins of Bias Busters of Kansas showed up at Tuesday night's meeting, to protest the mayor’s idea that would allow retailers to be able to ask people to remove their hat or hood, in businesses with surveillance.
Another idea, introduced by the mayor last week, to have an unmanned drone fly over the city, to record crime is still getting attention.
"The only drones I know of are in Afghanistan... I think it's an invasion of privacy and I don't think it's legal,” said Councilman Bob Archer. The mayor says he knows the idea was not legal the last time the council checked into the issue, but he was hoping to see if laws had changed, over the years.
The mayor also believes his salary of $20,000 a year, and council members' salary of $10,000 a year, should be increased, to attract the best possible candidates to run for office. Some council members disagree.
"It takes an inordinate amount of time - 45 to 50 hours a week,” said Bunten.
"I don't think we need a raise, to be honest with you. I think it's an honor to serve,” said Archer.
"As long as I'm in office, I won't vote to increase my salary. I campaigned on that,” said Councilman John Alcala.
Council members plan to discuss some of the mayor’s ideas in the future.
