TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Association of Zoos and Aquariums is granting a refreshed accreditation to the Topeka Zoo.
The zoo had to complete a detailed application and on-site inspection of all operations including conservation, education and its animal care. The zoo went through the process last month. It must be repeated every five years to continue membership in the AZA.
Speaking to the Topeka City Council at its meeting Tuesday night, Topeka City Manager Jim Colson said he'll provide information Wednesday on a USDA inspection from the beginning of September. He told the council it uncovered three issues he described as minor. He also said the AZA accreditation ruling should be a big vote of confidence, calling the group's process even more stringent than the USDA's.
