TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)__The Topeka Zoo has been a staple in the city's history for quite some time now, and over the years they find different fun ways to engage not just Topekans, but people from all over the nation in interesting animals and educational events.
Lions, tigers and bears, the zoo is celebrating 80 years of success and looking forward to many more by holding a Zoobilee.
"We're at a point where we're starting to talk about the future in two different avenues, our short term near future and the long term future that we're trying to account for the next 30 to 50 years." Says Zoo Director Brendan Wiley.
But Saturday was all about reflecting on the past and celebrating the Zoo's long term history.
"From a rainforest exhibit that won the first exhibit design award from an accrediting organization to first breedings, to the first time anybody could ever see a gorilla from more perspectives than you could even in Africa. So to reach that is a great accomplishment." Added Wiley
Even though it's the zoo's 80th birthday, it's not stopping attendees from partying like animals with the animals.
"We've been hitting the wine tonight. I think we both like the wine. We also like the otters, we're going to go watch them feeding tonight so i think that's going to be neat to see. We've enjoyed the alligators too. We stopped by there tonight and they were fun. got to hold one! That was nice and fun. Haven't done that yet." Shared Justin and Danielle Pippit.
Guests weren't the only ones excited about the zoobilee bash. The zoo was happy to see a great turn out to help mark another great birthday.
"We are extremely thrilled to be celebrating that event with so many guests here tonight that are getting to experience their zoo in just a slightly wilder way." Said Wiley
Proceeds from the Zoobilee go to the Friends Of The Topeka Zoo which helps to bring Topeka many fun and furry events.
