TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Veterans Day comes around to honor men and women in the armed forces, but also a reminder to take time to recognize those in our own community who have made sacrifices.
Central Park Community Center, through Parks and Recreation, and Perkins Restaurant teamed up this morning to serve our local veterans as thanks for serving us - with a pancake breakfast and performances.
Veterans young and old - some from World War II - came out to enjoy the day dedicated to them. Breakfasts like the one today are a perfect way to show them the community cares.
Cheryl Newton, Assistant Center Director, said she enjoys this event because the veterans are so appreciative.
"It's kind of emotional for them too," Newton said. "They don't want to be forgotten, and it's good that they're not."
Performances included songs from the New Beginnings Senior Chior and the State Street Singers Chorus.
Today's breakfast was the third annual Veterans Breakfast put on by the community center.
