TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The victim of last Friday's shooting death in southeast Topeka was identified as 26 year-old Jermel R. Robbins, of Topeka, the Topeka Police Dept. (TPD) said. Robbins slaying was the third homicide of the year in the Capital City.
Despite early reports that a person was arrested in connection with Robbins' killing over the weekend, investigators are still looking for a suspect. Initial reports early Sunday afternoon indicated someone was arrested in Independence, Missouri., Several hours later though, TPD Capt. Brian Desch revised the report saying that arrest only involved narcotics and was not related to Robbins' death.
According to TPD, Robbins was shot in front of his home his home in the 2100 block of SE Kentucky Ave. Witnesses told investigators they saw a silver Dodge Magnum station wagon leaving the scene.
Robbins was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died nearly an hour later.
After going almost half a year without a homicide, this is now Topeka's third homicide of the year.
The first, Tiffany Davenport-Ray was killed May 25th in the 1900 block of S. Kansas Ave.
The second came on the last day of May when Germail Rayton was killed at Freedom Park, just a mile from Friday's shooting.
