Topeka Schools Taking Action For Safety

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)- Local schools are increasing security in light of recent national events.

USD-437 has three officers who all have access to weapons. USD-501 has 20 officers that work daily in the district. Discussion has come up about having armed officers in the schools, but officials say it would be costly and hard to sustain.

"I think the cost of putting an armed officer in every school in Topeka would cost a great deal of money, but we understand that it's the Board of Education that has those very difficult decisions to make. And if they were to come to me and say they thought that was a reasonable expenditure, then we would carry out their mandates of course," said Director of Topeka Public School Safety for Topeka, Ronald Brown.

USD-437 is re-instituting buzzer systems at the elementary schools.
All exterior doors will be locked and visitors will now be buzzed into the offices.
