TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-Topeka schools are finding ways to unify their diverse students.
Principals and administrators from USD-501 Topeka Public School District held a diversity training seminar today. They focused on a book study, "Courageous Conversation" by Courtlandt Butts.
The goal is to breakdown barriers amongst themselves, so they can impact their students in the classroom
"Most of the teaching force is White Caucasiun people educating a bunch of kids of color. So how do we relate? And does that have an impact on the achievement levels? And we think it does," said Tammy Austin, Executive Director of Administration for Public Schools.
This is the first of six seminars over the next few months. Administrators are hoping this will eliminate the achievement gap between white and black students.
