TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A small fire forced the evacuation of a Topeka elementary school as the day began on Tuesday.

The fire was discovered in the bathroom of Meadows Elementary School, 201 SW Clay, around 8:30 a.m. Its principal, Nicole Dial, put it out with a fire extinguisher, a district spokesperson explained.

"One of my staff members, a speech pathologist, hollered at me that there was a fire in the bathroom and so I stuck my head in and saw the flames and ran around the corner to find a fire extinguisher and she came with me and found it and then I pulled the pin and put out the fire," recounted Dial.

All those fire drills paid off as the kids and staff headed outside, where they waited for about a half-hour before being allowed to return to class.

Investigators are still trying to determine what sparked the fire.
