Jennison Touts Topeka Riverfront Development

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The head of tourism efforts in the state says riverfront development could be a "game-changer" for Topeka.

Robin Jennison, Kansas Secretary of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, made the comments Tuesday at the Topeka Lodging Association's annual awards luncheon. Jennison said the hotel industry should get behind riverfront development efforts because it would draw people to the Capital City and put "heads on beds." He told the crowd of area hotel employees that, in turn, would provide them job security.

Jennison recounted taking a float trip down the Kansas River last September to celebrate the opening of a new access ramp at Belvue. He says it gave users a unique perspective of the river, its wildlife and vegetation and even its sandbars.

A smaller population and ease of travel from place to place are actually assets Kansas has that draw people to the area, Jennison said. He said developing Topeka's riverfront would add to those unique aspects.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) Topeka's hotel workers took a turn in the spotlight Tuesday.
