Topeka Fire Gets Go Ahead To Build New Station

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Topeka's Fire Station 13 is one step closer to becoming a reality.

Tuesday night, City Council Members voted unanimously to approve a building permit, allowing the station to be built on SW 6th Street across from the Security Benefit building.

Architects can now move forward with final drawings and components for the future site.

Topeka Fire Chief Greg Bailey says the new station will allow them to better serve the area.

"We as a department are not only responding to fire emergencies, but we respond to emergency medical calls," said Bailey. "So having a fire station located in this area affords us opportunity to arrive on scene when critical seconds matter, a lot sooner."

The $3.4 million building will sit on more than three acres of land, which was donated by the Sisters of Charity.
