TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)- Topeka area authorities Tuesday announced results of a major check-up on whether people convicted of sex, drug or violent crimes live where they say they do.
50 law enforcement officers from the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office, Topeka Police Department and additional assistance attributed to this initiative.
The Shawnee County Sheriff's Office conducted residential verifications for sex offenders, violent offenders and drug offenders registered in Shawnee County. Shawnee County has 872 registered offenders in Shawnee County - 514 of those are sex offenders, while the rest are drug and violent offenders.
Overall, authorities checked 479 addresses. Of those, 370 were compliant.
Sheriff Herman Jones says, outside the Topeka city limits, a total of 73 addresses were checked. 51 offenders were compliant and 4 were not. 16 addresses need more follow up and 2 offenders are currently incarcerated.
In addition, overall, Jones says two adults were arrested or cited on illegal drug charges and five adults were arrested on outstanding arrest warrants.
Topeka Police Chief Ron Miller says failure to register is a nonperson felony.
