Top Scams From 2013 To Be Aware Of

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- To celebrate National Consumer Protection Week, the Kansas Attorney General's Office makes it their mission to educate consumers about making smart choices and avoiding scams.

During 2013, their office handled more than 4,000 complaints from Kansas consumers. They also made 90 presentations to gorups throughout the state to help promote awareness and prevention of scams and rip-offs.

Here are the top 5 scams from 2013 to help you stay aware:

1) No-Call: Kansans who have registered their numbers on the Do-Not Call list can expect to be left alone; however, 17 enforcement actions against companies violating the No-Call Act were filed last year. The legislature is also working on improving the Act by prohibiting phone calls to cell phones.

2) Collection Agencies: Consumers have rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act as to when and how collectors can call. Scammers often pose as debt collectors; they call and aoffer a one-time deal to pay off debt for a low rate. Before giving out personal information to a debt collector, ask them to send you information in writing.

3) Internet Sales: Make sure you always buy from a trusted seller, especially when buying items from online auction/classified sites. Use a credit card for these purchases, so if you are a victim of a faulty product, you can dispute the payment. Never wire money to an online seller.

4) Cell Phones: Make sure to always thoroughly read the terms of a cell phone contract before signing. Try testing out coverage in your area with a prepaid service before deciding on a contract plan. Closely review your monthly bill, because third parties will sometimes add charges through your information they obtained from online or text message. If you receive charges or unwanted text messages, contact your provider.

5) Used Car Sales: Make sure to do research before buying a car, so you can get a good deal and reliable form of transportation. Get a detailed vehicle history report, have it inspected and test drive it in varying conditions. Make sure the dealer gives you promises and discounts in writing to avoid later disagreement about the terms of the sale.
