(KAKE)-- A teen wanted in connection to a stabbing in a Nebraska high school bathroom has been located in Kansas.
Authorities had been searching for 16-year-old Sarah Piccolo, saying she stabbed a 17-year-old student in a bathroom at Pius X High School in Lincoln on Monday morning.
Investigators say Piccolo stabbed 17-year-old Ellen Kopetzky with a survival knife with an eight-inch blade, then hit her with a hammer twice in the back of the head. Kopetzky underwent surgery and is recovering at a Lincoln hospital.
It's unclear why the attack occurred.
Lincoln Police tell our sister station, 10/11 News, that Piccolo was found this morning in Kansas. Just after 10 a.m. police were dispatched to a call concerning someone with car trouble at a hotel in Yates Center. When they ran the license plate, they discovered she was wanted.
Piccolo was taken into custody and will be detained at a juvenile detention facility in Kansas until she can be picked up by Nebraska authorities.
Yesterday, the Kopetzky family issued the following statement:
