"Taco" Al Going Strong After 50 Years

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - People lined up outside a Topeka restaurant Wednesday, helping its owners mark a milestone.

Taco Casa celebrated 50 years in business by serving up a great deal as a gift to its customers. Owner "Taco" Al Ward decided to offer tacos and soda pop for 50 cents, right through an extended 10 pm closing time Wednesday.

Ward and his wife opened their restaurant at 1423 SW 6th St., near the hospitals, on July 17, 1963. He joked that he expected he'd have a string of restaurants and retire by age 40, but you'll still find him behind the counter, taking orders, just as he was Wednesday.

Ward says it is the customers who make the business so enjoyable.

Taco Casa also hosted a dance from 8 to 10 pm Wednesday in a parking lot across the street to further celebrate.
