TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The search continues Friday for a suspect who shot and killed a man at a Topeka apartment Thursday afternoon.

Authorities were called around 2:30 pm Thursday to 1324 SW Western Ave. Police initially called the victim's injuries life-threatening, and later confirmed he had died.

The victim was identified as Benjamin D. Jackson, 24, of Topeka.

Police told 13 News that there was a knock at the Jackson's third-floor apartment door, and when he answered, a suspect shot him.

The suspect is described as a black man in his late teens or early 20s, 5'5" to 5'7" with a "fade" haircut. He was wearing red shorts and no shirt, but was seen carrying a black shirt, running south from the area of the shooting. Police say he may be traveling in a silver, four-door vehicle.

Jackson's girlfriend was reportedly inside the apartment at the time of the shooting, and was being questioned by police.

Jackson's mother and young daughter live in the apartment. After police began investigating Thursday afternoon, Jackson's mother came home with his daughter after a day at the pool, and discovered that her son had been shot and killed.

Neighbors are in shock because they said nothing of that nature had ever happened in the complex before. They describe Jackson and his family as nice, friendly people.

However, some neighbors complained about the doors to the building, that sometimes they are propped open and easy to get into without a key. They said that someone who doesn't live there can still easily enter the building.

None of the neighbors 13 News spoke with could imagine why someone would hurt Jackson.

Police did not know Thursday afternoon if the crime was connected to any other recent crimes in the area, or if it was gang or drug-related.

Detectives continued investigating throughout the night and the crime scene tape was still up Friday afternoon. They are looking into a motive and what relationships Jackson had.

"The motive, the cause are still under investigation," Captain Jerry Stanley of the Topeka Police Department said. "We're still waiting for preliminary reports from the coroner's office. We are following some leads, that's all I can tell at this time."

Stanley said that there is no indication that it was a random shooter, and all details of the shooter are still being looked into.

The description of the shooter is the same as described Thursday afternoon, but Stanley said police are aware that the suspect would have changed clothes.

Police ask anyone with information to call 785-234-0007 or detectives at 785-368-9400.

Their investigation is continuing. Check back with wibw.com for updates.
