TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Several WIBW-TV staff members were recognized by the Topeka Police Department before the quarterly crime meeting Wednesday.

Topeka Police Chief Ron Miller presented special "Chief's Coins" to news director Jon Janes, sales manager Roger Brokke, chief engineer Cary Lahnum, sales associate Greg Palmer, chief photographer Doug Brown, meteorologist Rob Peppers, master control operator Joe Garrett, and producer Michael Moore. Also recognized was a worker with Cintas who was conducting a training session at the station May 23. The Chief said he wanted to commend the group's actions in working together to detain Ray Miles.

Miles is charged with throwing a lamp through the station's glass front door in May, then assaulting Janes and Brokke before others joined in to tackle Miles. While they were holding him down, Miles pulled out a knife, stabbing Brokke and Palmer. More workers joined in to get the knife away from Miles and subdue him until police arrived.

The injured workers have since recovered.

Miller says the group stayed calm in the face of an attack. Rather than running away from danger, he said, they ran toward it to keep the rest of their coworkers out of harms way and to assist those who were under more direct threat.

A preliminary hearing for Miles is set to begin next Monday.
