TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A Topeka man is behind bars on charges he held a four-year-old girl's head underwater in a swimming pool in north Topeka.
Brian Mahkuk, 37, was booked Friday for attempted murder and aggravated kidnapping.
Topeka Police Lt. Jana Harden said that, at around 12:30 pm on July 13, the girl was walking with a friend in the 1400 block of NE Quincy when Mahkuk approached. She says he took the young girl into the yard of a nearby home and proceeded to hold her underwater in a swimming pool. Harden said a witness got to the child and took her to safety.
Harden says Mahkuk did not know the child previously, and the yard where the swimming pool was located was not his residence or hers. She says the girl's parents were aware of where the girl and friend were walking before the incident occurred.
Harden says officers took Mahkuk into custody at the scene. She says he was not booked into jail until five days later because he had been receiving medical treatment. She declined to elaborate on what treatment Mahkuk required.
Neither the victim nor the witness who saved her has been identified.
