The man shot and killed at a Lawrence apartment complex on Sunday was identified by police as 26 year-old Charles Brockman.
He was gunned down during a dispute with another person, according to Lawrence Police spokesperson Sgt. Trent McKinley. The other individual in that exchange was taken to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning, but police did not say who that person was.
Investigators believe Brockman showed up during a barbeque at the complex, 1121 East 13th Street, shortly before 6:00 p.m. and got out of his car carrying a shotgun.
The person with whom Brockman had a earlier dispute took off toward a second floor apartment, while several people tried to intervene and convince him to leave. Undeterred, Brockman started running for the complex and children and adults started to scatter.
Gunfire erupted seconds later and Brockman was shot by the person he was pursuing, according to police. Wounded, Brockman walked over to a car and was driven to a hospital where he later died.
After they have finished their investigation, police say they will forward their information to the Douglas Co. District Attorney's Office, who will decide whether or not to press charges.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Lawrence Police Dept. Investigations Division at (785) 830-7430.
