TOPEKA (WIBW) Local students gathered at the Topeka Performing Arts Center Thursday to learn about classical music.

More than 4,000 Northeast Kansas students from 69 schools attended two free concerts presented by the Topeka Symphony Orchestra. This was the 15th annual Topeka Symphony School Day Concert.

The concerts were geared towards 5th and 8th graders and lasted one hour each. The performances featured “The Firebird Suite” by Stravinsky and “Danson Number Two” by Marquez.

It was led by conductor candidate Kyle Wiley Pickett. The California native also will have the baton for the symphony's concert at 7:30 pm Saturday, Jan. 12, at Washburn's White Concert Hall.
