Standoff Ends; Suspect Not Found At SW Topeka Apartment Complex

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A heavy police presence surrounded a southwest Topeka apartment complex Wednesday night. But it seems the subject of the standoff got away.

Topeka Police say they were called to a domestic dispute around 5:50 pm at Villa West Apartments, just west of 27th and Wanamaker.

TPD Lt. Ron Gish says a man and woman were arguing. He says the man reportedly had a gun and was threatening others.

Gish says four people were initially inside an apartment with the man. They got out safely. It was believed the man was still inside and negotiating teams spent two hours trying to make contact with the man. Authorities entered the apartment just after 9:30 pm, but the no one was inside. It's not known where the suspect might have gone.

Gish says the rest of the apartment building was also evacuated. People in nearby buildings were told to stay inside because the situation was potentially dangerous.

Lt. Gish said this is an isolated incident and there is no immediate harm to the public of Topeka.

Topeka Police had a command post set up near 2800 SW Villa West Dr. while they worked to resolve the situation.
