TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ The Kansas Department of Transportation has closed some highways in southwest Kansas because of hazardous traveling conditions.

The department said Monday that it closed U.S. 160 from Meade to near Ashland; U.S. 183 from the Kansas-Oklahoma state line to the junction of U.S. 160 and near Sitka and U.S. 283 from the Kansas-Oklahoma state line to Dodge City.

Blowing and drifting snow has caused hazardous driving conditions and visibility was extremely low in the region.

The transportation department says most other roads in southwest Kansas and eastward are snow packed and icy, including U.S. 50 from Cimarron to Hutchinson and U.S. 54 from Liberal to Pratt.
