TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The snow made for slick roads Wednesday around northeast Kansas, especially over the morning hours.

AAA Kansas' Roadside Rescue teams answered almost 200 calls between midnight and 5 pm Wednesay. Jim Hanni of AAA Kansas says that's 35 percent more than a typical Wednesday.

Most of the calls were to assist people who slid into the ditch. Later in the day, the cold led to more calls for jump starts, batteries and other starting issues.

Hanni said crews report drivers had problems with black ice, which serves as a reminder to slow down in winter weather conditions. He says drivers should increase their following distance and be looking further ahead down the road so they have more time to react to anything that might be in their path. In slick conditions, it takes longer to stop. Also, Hanni says avoid using cruise control in slick conditions.

Hanni said most of the calls Wednesday came from the Junction City, Manhattan, Wamego and St. Marys areas along Hwy. 24 and I-70.
