Topeka Shooting Suspects Arrested in Nebraska Following Gunfight

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- Police have arrested the man who they say shot and killed a man in Topeka Wednesday afternoon.

Michael Engstrom, age 33 of Topeka, has been arrested in Nebraska. Engstrom was taken into custody by Johnson County Nebraska Sheriff’s Office after he robbed a convenience store and had two gunfights with law enforcement. During those encounters, one deputy was shot and suffered a non-life threatening injury.

On Wednesday, authorities responded to a shooting at the Tedman Apartments, located at 1255 SW Topeka Blvd Apt #21 around 2:30 p.m.

Ricky Mitchell, 35 of Topeka was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. The second victim, Bridget Gakle, 28, of Topeka, was also transported to a local hospital. She had non-life threatening injuries.

Engstrom is reported to have an address in Gardner, Kan. in the past.

He was seen with a 34-year-old female who is 5'4, 350 lbs. She is Jamie Maria Russsel, who is considered a person of interest. The second is a 14-year-old female. The whereabouts of the two women is still unknown.

Detectives confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the suspect and the two females were in a white 4-door 2009 Ford Focus with a temporary tag.

Police said the incident was a targeting shooting and not a random attack.

The Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter was called in to search the area for the shooting suspect.

Topeka High School was placed on lockdown for a short time as a precautionary measure following the incident. Staff at Quinton Heights Elementary were also made aware of the situation.
