TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Lab results from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are holding up reports on the murders of two Topeka police officers.
Corporal David Gogian and Officer Jeff Atherly were shot and killed in the line of duty two months ago this week. The Shawnee County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation into the incident. Sheriff's officials told 13 News Monday they're hopeful the KBI lab results will be available soon. They will then send the case to the Shawnee County District Attorney's Office for consideration of any charges.
Authorities say David Tiscareno got out of the back seat of a vehicle in the parking lot of the Dillons grocery store at Huntoon and Lane on December 16 and opened fire on the officers. The officers were approaching the vehicle because it had been reported as suspicious with possible drug activity.
Two women also were in the car. So far, authorities have not released their identifies.
After the shooting, Tiscareno got back in the car alone and fled the scene. He was killed about 12 hours later following a standoff with authorities.
