TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)- On Tuesday the Topeka City Council voted to not use STAR bonds to purchase Heartland Park Topeka.
Council members voted 6 to 4 to put the plan permanently in park.
Wednesday the company who was in talks to manage the track, Shelby Development, LLC issued this statement on the vote.
“We are disappointed in the City’s decision, but respect that those voting against the issuance of the STAR bonds believe they were acting in the best interests of the constituents. We will step back, weight our options and move forward accordingly.
Mayor Larry Wolgast along with council members Michelle De La Isla, Karen Hiller and Brendan Jensen voted for the purchase.
The NHRA has terminated its contract with the city. They will solely operate the NHRA National event in Topeka May 22.
