TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- Kansas' first female Senate President is boasting a new award. Not for her new political post,but for her fight against cancer.

Senator Susan Wagle has battled lymphoma twice and cared for her son when he had leukemia.

Today, University of Kansas Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little and Cancer Center Director Dr. Roy Jensen presented Wagle with the 2013 Cancer Center Leadership Award.

Wagle wants those battling the disease to stay encouraged and keep up the fight. According to the American Cancer Society Statistics. The death rate from cancer in the U.S has fallen 20 percent from its peak in 1991.
