Sen. Dole's Thank-You Tour Shows Mutual Appreciation

OSKALOOSA, Kan. (WIBW) _ One by one, the more than four dozen people packed into the county commission room at the Jefferson County Courthouse approached the chair where former Kansas Senator Bob Dole was seated. For most, the conversation began by saying, "Thank you."

It was another example of how Dole's thank-you tour of the state continues to be a show of mutual appreciation. The visit to Oskaloosa Monday morning launched Dole's sixth visit to his home state since April. He plans to visit every Kansas county by fall.

As in his previous stops, some of the attendees brought old photos of a previous meeting with Dole or memorabilia from one of his campaigns over his 30-plus years representing Kansas in Congress.

Mike Kelly was among those at the Oskaloosa stop. He said he wanted to personally thank Dole for the kindness Dole showed to a friend who was wounded in Vietnam. Kelly says his friend was hospitalized at Walter Reed Medical Center for an extended time and Dole paid several visits to him and other service members, only no one knew about it until years later.

"It touched me," Kelly said. "He's meant the world to Kansas. They don't make them like they used to."

Dole also visited Alma, Council Grove and Marion on Monday.
