Semi Driver Killed In Toll Booth Crash Reportedly Asleep

LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW) -- The semi driver killed when his tractor-trailer slammed into a toll booth between Lawence and Bonner Springs over the weekend may have been asleep at the wheel.

Sergiy Angelchev's manager reportedly told the Lawrence Journal-World that the 30 year appeared to be sleeping in photos taken right beforehand.

The 30 year-old Colorado man was on his way back from a cross-country trip from California to New York when he crashed into a toll booth on the westbound lane of I-70 near milepost 217 outside of Lawrence, they said.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says it does not appear he braked or took any other evasive action before his big rig collided with the westbound toll ticket booth at Bonner Springs.

It's an automated dispenser, so no turnpike attendant was inside, but Angelchev died.

A passenger in his truck, 25-year-old Roman Ilyaich man also from Aurora was injured.
