TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- A Topeka elementary school was placed on lock-down Wednesday as officers searched for an armed robbery suspect nearby.

The Topeka Police Department was dispatched to 1301 S.W. Harrison around 7:49 a.m. in response to the armed robbery incident.

According to police, a woman was approached by a man with a gun who threatened her and stole an undisclosed amount of money.

The suspect then fled to the southeast, according to TPD.

As TPD searched surrounding areas for a suspect, officers with the USD 501 Police Department were notified of the situation. Two district police officers were then dispatched to Williams Magnet School, located blocks from the robbery incident at 1301 S.E. Monroe.

The school was placed on lock-down, as officers secured all exterior doors of the building.

The lock-down was lifted later in the morning, without incident.

According to Ron Brown, Director of Safety and Chief of School Police for USD 501, school lock-downs are standard procedure in these situations.

"Students are usually unaware of the situation," Brown said. "We use an abundance of caution to keep staff and students safe."

The suspect in the armed robbery was not located as of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said. He is described as a black male, last seen wearing a black hoodie and black jeans. He should be considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at (785) 234-0007.
