TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A new scam has popped up in northeast Kansas - and it targets grandmas and grandpa.
According to Pottawatomie Co. Sheriff Greg Riat, at least two people who live there have fallen prey.
The scams starts when a grandparent gets a call from someone who says they are from the American Embassy in Mexico and their grandchild is in trouble.
The caller claims the grandchild is being held and they need money to get out. The grandparents are told not to contact anyone and just to send the funds.
In a another incident, the caller said they were with the Mexican police.
The grandparents have lost thousands of dollars - thinking they're helping their grandkids - only to find out they were never in jail or in danger, said Riat. And, since the money wsa sent out of the country, he doesn't think it will be recovered.
If you've received one of those calls, he says you should go ahead and try to contact the person supposedly in jail or your local law enforcement.
