(WIBW) - Santa Fe Trail High School students and staff are mourning the death of their principal, David Swaim.

Swaim died Friday at his home. He was 56 years old.

Swaim spent the past 17 years at Santa Fe Trail High School, first as associate principal then principal.

USD 434 Superintendent Steve Pegram says Swaim battled cancer for the past five years and continued working until his death.

"He was a knowledgeable leader in high school curriculum and his contributions to the district will be greatly missed," Pegram said in a statement sent to district patrons.

Swaim previously served as an educator in Seneca, Junction City and Marysville.

A celebration of life is planned for 7 pm Wednesday at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Swaim's hometown of Hiawatha. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Brown County chapter of the American Cancer Society, 124 S 7th St., Hiawatha, KS 66434.

Pegram says the USD 434 Board of Education meeting scheduled for Wednesday evening is postponed to Thursday so administrators and board members may attend Swaim's memorial.
